What happens when you come for biblical counseling?
When you come for biblical counseling you should expect to be treated with respect, kindness, compassion and integrity. You will not be condemned here. You will not be treated like a child. You will be treated like a courageous adult who is taking a wise step toward improving your life. You will be listened to. Your counselor will do her very best to truly understand you and to help you find solutions that are appropriate to who you are and what your life circumstances are.
When you call to schedule an appointment or make an appointment through this website, you will be scheduled for an Introductory Session. There is no charge for this session. This is a little like a “first date” – you will have a chance to meet your counselor and get a feel for her personality. She will get to know you a little and hear a little about what you are struggling with and what you hope to accomplish in biblical counseling. During this session you will be given some additional information about the counseling process and you will be asked to go home and think about the Introductory Session before making a decision about ongoing counseling.
Biblical Counseling is a very personal process and it is essential that you feel comfortable with the person who will know so much about your life. You must be able to be completely honest in order to benefit from counseling and so you will need to feel very safe and comfortable with your counselor. If, after the Introductory Session you feel it is not a good fit for you, there is no need to do anything further. This happens occasionally and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. We can, however, attempt to refer you to a more appropriate counselor if you wish.
If you wish to pursue biblical counseling on a regular basis, you can call or use the website to schedule a regular counseling appointment time. You can expect your appointments to last between 60 and 90 minutes. Generally your appointments should be weekly in order to make progress, but occasionally other arrangements are made.
Counseling can go on for a few weeks to several years. Most counseling cases go on for 6-18 weeks. You and your counselor will reevaluate regularly to make sure you are making the progress you desire in the direction that is important to you. We respect your investment of time and effort and money.
