About Me – Susan Phillips Biblical Counselor
Susan Phillips is a certified Biblical Counselor who practiced in Lompoc, California for over 17 years and recently moved her practice to Vista, California. Susan and her late husband, Wayne, became “accidental counselors” early in their marriage after Wayne was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease and given 3 years to live. People watched their family cope with such a tragic illness with grace, dignity, humor and perseverance and gradually began calling for advice and encouragement and support for their own struggles.
Susan has formal training in Biblical Counseling and is certified with the International Association of Biblical Counselors, the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation (Level One and Two), and the Association of Biblical Counselors. She is a partner in the Biblical Counseling Coalition and has trained with the Institute of Biblical Counseling and Discipleship in Escondido, California and the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors.
Susan has a wide variety of life experiences to draw from – having dealt with divorce and remarriage, a spouse with substance abuse, loss of parents, siblings, and spouse, struggles with weight, financial struggles, child-rearing, blended family, dishonesty and hiding, and care-giving, to name a few. Her life has been touched very personally by others struggling with substance abuse, physical/sexual abuse, deception, depression, anxiety, bitterness and unforgiveness, eating disorders, schizophrenia, sexual disorders, cutting, bipolar disorder, abortion and many other life trials and tragedies. Grace is the overarching theme of Susan’s approach to counseling along with an almost ridiculous optimism about what happens when someone seeks God and the wisdom of His Word earnestly for help.
Susan’s approach to the counseling process is first to communicate Love and a sense that the counseling room is a safe and nonjudgmental place, then to get to Know a counselee well, then to Speak into a person’s life with biblical wisdom and encouragement and then encourage you to Do the things that will help you grow and change.
Susan believes that counseling is most effective in a holistic environment where you are considered in every area of your life – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Susan is collaborative in her approach – working together with your physician and other professionals who are helping you as well as with your family and friends who support you and your pastor or other church leadership who serve you spiritually.
